How Home Accessories Can Elevate Your Home

Home accessorizing is like adding jewelry to your outfit just before leaving for the day.  It completes and elevates your look.  The same is true for accessorizing your home.  UpMarket can help you beautifully accessorize your home, which will add interest and coziness to your space. 

At UpMarket, we have a wide assortment of accessories, with many different types of textures and styles to choose from.  Whether you learn toward modern, traditional, or eclectic, we have your style!  You’ll find “levels of design” --meaning levels of price, layering styles, and “personalities” of items. 

How to Begin:

There is no equation or rule of thumb. Everyone has their own recipe for expressing who they are. The tip is just to start! 

A great way to break the ice is by gathering all the accessories that you already own into one place. We can’t tell you how many times that we have covered a dining room table with “treasures” so that we can get a good look at them and start to plan our design.

How do you find “treasures” that you already own?

Look for things that have special meaning to you and might be a conversation piece (family heirlooms, pictures, dishes and are just a few of items you might bring out). Many clients tell us, “I don’t really have anything that will work,” but they are forgetting about all the items that they have “hiding” around their own homes.  Check closets, the attic, and drawers where you stashed those “special” gifts from Aunt Rebecca that just didn’t seem right, at the time.   You will be surprised at the number of items you have, and when paired with different decorations, they can take on new life and transition your accessories into a current look.

Rediscovering Home Accessories: 

Here are some unusual items that our clients have rediscovered that absolutely completed the install in their homes:

  • Deer horns
  • Boots
  • Spurs
  • Family pictures updated with new frames
  • Removing book jackets to reveal beautiful colors of hardbacked books and using those in the styling
  • Using art in different ways. (For example, hanging the art inside or placing
    it on an easel in a bookshelf
  • Making collections of items (arrows, spurs, hats, crosses)
  • Displaying family heirlooms (crystal candlesticks, china, or dishes)

Styling a Bookcase with Decor:

Styling bookshelves is something that people often find hard to pull off. First, it is important to realize that styling a bookshelf requires a good number of accessories and for the best look a good variety of textures and layers should be used. Take for example this low bookcase in our store that we styled. We utilized decorative books that make a statement and provide color to the space. Decorative vases and containers were also thoughtfully placed to add interest and in some instances height. The final step was to fill in with smaller items like the decorative geode box.

Layering of Home Accessories:  

At UpMarket, we are huge “layerers” (if that’s even a word).  It’s a technique we utilize to make a home feel cozier.  It can amount to putting a throw on the end of a sofa or stacking books to look as if they have just been read.  Come into the store and visit with us, we have plenty more accessorizing tricks up our sleeves!
